Purpose of PFP application

The main reasons for PFP application to on-shore, off-shore and general steel structures are to protect human's lives from unexpected fire and explosion while at the same time protecting huge amounts of assets.

Onshore Plant

Mainly places to apply PFP on land plants are natural gas refining facilities, crude oil refining facilities, thermal power plants, cogeneration plants, chemical plants and crude oil & gas storage facilities. In recent years, the use of epoxy type paints with light weight and good efficiency is increasing gradually instead of cementitous type of paints that was used before.

Offshore Plant

PFP, which applied on offshore plant, can be used for various types of structures such as FPSO, Fixed Platform, FLNG, FSO and Jack Up Rig that produce crude oil and gas from harash environments such as Antarctica or Arctic. It is also applied to gas or oil storage facilities (vessels). In most cases, the Jet fire section is mandatory under the regulations that requiring higher safety.

How to apply PFP materials

Working Procedure of PFP

Preparatory work (drawings, paints, equipments and tools) is an important thing for PFP application.

Cleaning & masking

Confirmation of primer coating's dry film thicness (50~75㎛) and curing condition, check of cleanliness, work hold section, work to check whether protection is well for non PFP section before starting work.

Before PFP & 1ST

For example, if the thickness of PFP area is assumed to be 8mm, apply 1st coat with 4mm and reinforce the mesh on it. (※ The purpose of the mesh installation is to increase the tensile strength when the PFP material is swollen due to the heat of fire and prevent being fallen out of the installation)

Thickness check

When 1st coat is applied, the wet film thickness is periodically measured with a wet film gauge (Left photo) and then is applied uniformly. After 1st coat & mesh is cured, the correct film thickness is measured with a pin gauge and the remaing film thickness is recored for the next coat (See photo on the light).

2nd COAT SPRAY

Confirm the checked film thickness and apply the recorded film thickness to achieve the specified total film thickness.

Trowel & Roller

Make the final surface appearance evenly with use of trowel and roller.

Final Thickness check & Stipple

Stipple coat is applied if necessary to increase the adhesion with top-coat after the confirmation of final coating thickness and appearance.
